The Under-Appreciation of Artistic Types In Our Society

I read that writer H.P. Lovecraft was pretty much unknown before he died. He is pretty famous now, although admittedly I have never personally read his work. The way I found out the bit of information about his pre-death obscurity is that I was researching another writer (Stephen King) and I found a reference to Lovecraft.

I find that like Lovecraft, many artists (whether literary, musical, visual or whatever) have become well known only after they've departed this present world. My question is, why aren't there more LIVING artistic success stories? It's rather morbid to think that many artists only have posthumous success, when they are no longer here to enjoy the fruits of their labors.

However, it is a testament to how under-appreciated the artistic in our society often are.

  1. I've been ranting about this subject for years. I had a great professor in music theory at my community college. Artists are the architects of society....think about it! Music, journalists, writers, visual and performance artists......we are the men and women who complete the imaginations of others by our tangible work and we are also so taken for granted. Posthumously, no problem; as long as my kids get the proceeds. But ignorance and the lack of our contributions to society is unacceptable and hampers, dulls our ambitions to be even more creative and progressive. We will breakthrough the establishment on our terms and conventional means.....it's just a matter of time, as the internet is still in its infancy and we'll prevail with the power of many, many artists forging a path to social recognition. Awesome article, Mr. Dutton. As usual, keep at it and stay well with your new family. I will get back to you soon, brother. So much to talk about. Peace
