The Under-Appreciation of Artistic Types In Our Society

I read that writer H.P. Lovecraft was pretty much unknown before he died. He is pretty famous now, although admittedly I have never personally read his work. The way I found out the bit of information about his pre-death obscurity is that I was researching another writer (Stephen King) and I found a reference to Lovecraft.

I find that like Lovecraft, many artists (whether literary, musical, visual or whatever) have become well known only after they've departed this present world. My question is, why aren't there more LIVING artistic success stories? It's rather morbid to think that many artists only have posthumous success, when they are no longer here to enjoy the fruits of their labors.

However, it is a testament to how under-appreciated the artistic in our society often are.
